London-based brothers Over Sands have announced their upcoming sophomore EP Roman Rooms. This follows their debut self-titled EP released at the end of 2015 via tastemaker Los Angeles label B3SCI, which saw positive reviews from critics including Clash, Indie Shuffle, Shortlist, and The Line of Best Fit.
The latest cut from the EP, ‘Woke Up Haunted’ finds the duo in a nostalgic place ruminating on bygone days. The past can a source of comfort but also a painful place to revisit and however adept we are with selective memory, it’s not so easy to be distracted when we are asleep. The themes within the track deal with the kinds of dreams when person or place from the past comes to visit in what was an altogether happier time, and then the fallout from leaving that place and waking up to a darker present. Combining hip-hop inspired rhythms, woozy guitars and textured synthesizers juxtaposed with jarring percussion and strings ‘Woke Up Haunted’ see the duo paint a warm but unsettled landscape.
Listen To ‘Woke Up Haunted’:
Mostly recorded at night when the former school building their studio is located in was deserted, the duo manipulated field recordings captured within the long-reverberating corridors to infuse the song with natural, haunting soundscapes. Distant footsteps, dripping taps, creaking doors, and humming lights became synths, beats, and percussion.
Roman Rooms was written and recorded at Over Sands’ East London studio (far removed from the beach house where their debut was conceived). The title of the EP ‘Roman Rooms’ is inspired by the memory technique of the same name, which works by associating images and objects in a visualised room, to recall information. In the case of the EP, each song is intended as a room to be explored, with its own objects, images, and memories.
Over Sands’ sophomore EP will be released on September 2nd worldwide in digital format.
