There has been a lot happening with celebrated British shoegaze pioneers RIDE in the past year, including a massive tour, but the band’s frontman Mark Gardener has continued to support his side project Pure Phase Ensemble 4. Their album ‘Live at SpaceFest!’ is the first long-play, featuring Gardener in all his shoegaze space rock glory, to be released since the 1990s.

Pure Phase Ensemble 4 presents a new video for ‘Happy Dancing Woman’. The original version features on the LP, while Ummagma has created an edit of this song, also available via Bandcamp. Several other videos were previously released in support of this album.

Watch ‘Happy Dancing Woman’:

Pure Phase Ensemble is a supergroup of sorts – it’s an international music collective, created especially for the SpaceFest festival in Gdansk, which takes place annually in the first week of December. The Ensemble brings together select musicians from Poland and abroad together for a special workshop series, where they compose a concert’s worth of music and present live for festival-goers. Each year, this unique performance is recorded live and subsequently released as an LP.

The workshop programme is jointly directed by Ray Dickaty, a British saxophonist improviser and former member of Spiritualized (1997-2002), and Karol Schwarz (KSAS), who also manages Nasiono Records. Along with these two key figures, every year a legendary, internationally recognised musician is invited to co-curate the workshop overlapping the festival. Apart from Mark Gardener’s involvement, other music curators include Hugo Race (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Chris Olley (Six By Seven), Steve Hewitt (ex Placebo), and Jaime Harding (Marion).

“At first there was no music–and then after five days we played a great musical set to a very appreciative public in Gdansk at the SpaceFest! festival. That was a great feeling for me and great to see how much the other musicians I worked with enjoyed that night along with the process of pulling the music together,” explains Mark Gardener. “I like that challenge and that’s a healthy kind of stress as it really focuses the people and the music and keeps all very fresh and spontaneous. It’s easy to overwork and mess up music that at one time was fresh and instinctive.”

Pure Phase Ensemble 4 ‘Live at SpaceFest!’ is currently available on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify and the CD is also available on the Nasiono Records website.
