In an appropriately theatrical plot twist, Joe McGinty (previously of Psychedelic Furs) and Andrea Diaz (of Superhuman Happiness) have come together as The Duchess and the Fox to create a dynamic piano melody, “St. Vitus”. The single debuted on Stereogum and serves as the first taste of their self-titled EP, due for a February 2016 release.
“St. Vitus” is a noir piano ballad with soaring vocals seemingly more at home in a dimly-lit cabaret bar than on a website. The subtle additions of clarinet and a pleasantly-unidentifiable electronic instrument give the track the extra oomph to separate it from the usual cabaret ballads, loved only by musical theater enthusiasts. “St. Vitus”, as well as the rest of the EP, glide over genre barriers to appeal to any music fan.
Diaz explains, “I met someone in New Orleans who had come to visit the city for a night. We rode through Brooklyn on our bicycles, passing bars like the Manhattan Inn, where coincidentally Joe and I met for the first time, and the metal bar, St. Vitus which is just down the street. The wind was blowing though my hair, and I just remember laughing. It was a moment that was tender and full of life. I wrote the song to commemorate that experience and in the process, it became a song about longing and nostalgia. Nostalgia is bittersweet. The sadness is comes from knowing the moment is gone, and it will never return. The sweetness is remembering the moment is in your heart. That’s where you get to keep it.”
Just in time for Halloween, The Duchess and the Fox deliver a thrillingly haunting version of “I Put a Spell on You”, darkly seductive and ready to put you in the perfect mood to don your black lace flapper costume and head out to your local haunted speakeasy.
Between the musical mastery shown on both “St. Vitus” and “I Put a Spell on You”, the upcoming EP promises to dazzle beyond the cabaret crowd. The Duchess and the Fox EP is slated for a February 2 release.
